priešais + accusative
Opposite with Priešais
priešais + accusative = opposite, facing: Kavinė yra priešais stotį. (The café is opposite the station.)
How It Works
1. Opposite, across from.
- Kavinė yra priešais stotį. (The café is opposite the station.)
- Autobusų stotelė yra priešais parką. (The bus stop is opposite the park.)
2. Facing a person. Pronouns take their accusative forms: Jis atsisėdo priešais mane. (He sat down across from me.)
3. Without a noun. Priešais can also stand alone as an adverb when it is clear what it is opposite: Priešais yra vaistinė. (There is a pharmacy opposite.)
4. Priešais or prieš. Prieš with the accusative can also mean in front of, but it also means before, ago and against: see before, ago and in front of. Priešais only describes place, so it is the clear choice for opposite.
5. The case. Like prieš, priešais takes the accusative. Russian напротив takes the genitive, but Lithuanian priešais takes the accusative. In Lithuanian, say priešais stotį, not priešais stoties.
