par + Accusative (Role)
Working as and Becoming
Use par + accusative for a job or role: strādāt par skolotāju (to work as a teacher). Use it with kļūt for what someone becomes: kļūt par ārstu (to become a doctor).
How It Works
1. Working as: strādāt par.
- Viņa strādā par skolotāju. (She works as a teacher.)
- Vasarā es strādāju par viesmīli. (In summer I work as a waiter.)
The accusative singular is the same for the man's and the woman's job title: skolotājs and skolotāja both give par skolotāju.
2. Becoming: kļūt par. Kļūt (to become) has the present forms kļūstu, kļūsti, kļūst and the past forms kļuvu, kļuvi, kļuva.
- Viņš kļuva par ārstu. (He became a doctor.)
- Par ko tu gribi kļūt? (What do you want to be?)
- Mēs kļuvām par draugiem. (We became friends.)
With an adjective, kļūt takes no par, and the adjective stays in the nominative: Viņš kļuva slims (He became ill), Laiks kļūst siltāks (The weather is getting warmer).
3. Other verbs with this par.
- ievēlēt par (to elect as): Viņu ievēlēja par prezidentu. (He was elected president.)
- saukt par (to call someone something): Draugi viņu sauc par Džeku. (His friends call him Jack.)
- pārvērsties par (to turn into): Ūdens pārvērtās par ledu. (The water turned into ice.)
4. Par or kā? Kā compares: Viņš runā kā skolotājs means he talks like a teacher. Par names the actual role or the result of a change.

- Par ko tu gribi kļūt, kad izaugsi?

The question word takes par too: par ko.

Draugi is plural, so par takes the dative: par labiem draugiem.
