Verbs With Fixed Prepositions
Learn these verbs together with their preposition: baidīties no (to be afraid of), interesēties par (to be interested in), rūpēties par (to take care of). A few take a bare case instead, like piedalīties + locative.
How It Works
1. Par + accusative.
- interesēties par (to be interested in): Es interesējos par vēsturi.
- rūpēties par (to take care of): Viņa rūpējas par māti.
- domāt par, runāt par (to think about, to talk about)
- priecāties par (to be glad about): Es priecājos par tevi. (I am happy for you.)
2. No + genitive.
- baidīties no (to be afraid of): Bērns baidās no tumsas.
- atteikties no (to give up, to turn down): Viņš atteicās no darba.
3. Uz + accusative.
- atbildēt uz (to answer): Lūdzu, atbildiet uz jautājumu!
- cerēt uz (to hope for): Mēs ceram uz labu laiku.
- skatīties uz (to look at): Skaties uz mani!
4. Ar + instrumental. satikties ar (to meet) and precēties ar (to marry): Rīt es satiekos ar draugiem. See ar.
5. No preposition: the locative. Piedalīties (to take part in) and iemīlēties (to fall in love with) take a bare locative: piedalīties konkursā (to take part in a contest), Viņš iemīlējās Annā. (He fell in love with Anna.)
