ņemot vērā

Taking into Account

Level 5

Ņemot vērā means taking into account or considering. Ņemot vērā laikapstākļus, spēle tika pārcelta. (Taking the weather into account, the match was postponed.)

How It Works

1. The verb behind it. Ņemt vērā means to take into account. Vērā never changes, and the thing considered is the object:

  • Lūdzu, ņemiet vērā, ka veikals svētdienās ir slēgts. (Please note that the shop is closed on Sundays.)

Ņemot vērā is its -ot form (see -ot and -oties), and it keeps the same object.

2. Accusative object. The object is accusative in both numbers, because there is no preposition:

  • Ņemot vērā laikapstākļus, spēle tika pārcelta. (Taking the weather into account, the match was postponed.)
  • Ņemot vērā tavu pieredzi, mēs tev piedāvājam vadītāja amatu. (Considering your experience, we are offering you the manager's position.)

3. With a clause. Before a whole fact, use ņemot vērā, ka: Ņemot vērā, ka bija vēls, mēs braucām mājās ar taksometru. (Since it was late, we went home by taxi.)

4. At the end. The phrase can close a sentence, often to qualify a judgment: Cena ir laba, ņemot vērā dzīvokļa atrašanās vietu. (The price is good, considering where the flat is.)

5. Commas. Like other -ot phrases, ņemot vērā and its object are set off with commas.

The ordinary verb ņemt vērā, here as a polite command.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the dative instead of the accusative.

Ņemot vērā laikapstākļiem, spēle tika pārcelta.
Ņemot vērā laikapstākļus, spēle tika pārcelta.

Ņemt vērā takes a direct object in the accusative. There is no preposition here, so the plural stays accusative: laikapstākļus.

  • Adding uz after ņemot vērā.

Ņemot vērā uz laikapstākļiem, spēle tika pārcelta.
Ņemot vērā laikapstākļus, spēle tika pārcelta.

Neskatoties uz needs uz, but ņemot vērā does not. Its object follows directly, in the accusative.
