vai tad / vai tiešām
Surprised Questions
Add tad or tiešām after vai to show surprise. Vai tad tu nezināji? (Didn't you know, then?) Vai tiešām? (Really?)
How It Works
1. Vai tad: I expected the opposite. A plain question with vai is neutral. Adding tad shows that the speaker thought the answer was obvious:
- Vai tad tu nezināji? (Didn't you know, then?) The speaker thought you knew.
- Vai tad šodien nav svētdiena? (Isn't it Sunday today?) The speaker thought it was.
- Vai tad es to teicu? (Did I say that?) This means "I didn't say that."
With a negative verb, vai tad expects "yes". Without a negative, it often expects "no" and can sound like a gentle protest: Vai tad tā var? (How can you do that?)
2. Vai tiešām: is that really true? Tiešām means really or truly. Vai tiešām asks for confirmation of news that surprises you:
- Vai tiešām? (Really?) as a short reply.
- Vai tiešām tu pats to uzcepi? (Did you really bake it yourself?)
- Vai tiešām jau ir pusnakts? (Is it really midnight already?)
In relaxed speech Tiešām? on its own also works as a reply.
3. Word order. Tad and tiešām usually come right after vai, and they can also follow the subject: Vai tu tiešām to uzcepi? The rest of the question keeps its usual order. At the very end of a sentence, tad usually means "at that time" instead (see tad).
4. Other ways to show doubt. A tag question with vai ne checks something you already believe, and diezin vai says you doubt it.

Word by Word: Q then you not-knew?

- Vai tiešām tu pats to uzcepi?
Did you really bake it yourself?
Word by Word: Q really you yourself it baked?
- Vai tad šodien nav svētdiena?
Isn't it Sunday today?
Word by Word: Q then today is-not Sunday?

- Vai tiešām jau ir pusnakts?
Is it really midnight already?
Word by Word: Q really already is midnight?
- Vai tad tā var runāt ar mammu?
How can you talk to your mum like that?
Word by Word: Q then so can talk with mum?
Without a negative, vai tad here expects "no". It works as a gentle protest.
Common Mistakes
Using vai tad for an ordinary question.
Vai tad veikals ir atvērts?Vai veikals ir atvērts? This mistake is about meaning. Vai tad tells the listener that you expected a different answer. To simply ask whether the shop is open, use plain vai.
Moving tad to the end of a question that should sound surprised.
Vai tu nezināji tad?Vai tad tu nezināji?At the very end of the question, tad is heard as "at that time", so it asks "Didn't you know back then?". To show surprise, put tad early in the question, right after vai.
