Short Vocatives in -iņ

Short Affectionate Address

Level 3

Diminutives in -iņš and -iņa drop their ending when you call someone: dēliņ! (sonny!), meitiņ! (dear daughter!), māmiņ! (Mummy!). The short form sounds warm and familiar.

How It Works

1. Masculine -iņš → -iņ. dēliņš → dēliņ!. This is simply the first-declension vocative, which drops the final -s or -š: Sveiks, mans mīļais dēliņ! (Hello, my dear son!).

2. Feminine -iņa → -iņ. māmiņa → māmiņ!, meitiņa → meitiņ!, sirsniņa → sirsniņ! (sweetheart!). This short form is typical of relaxed family speech.

3. Diminutives in -ītis. These second-declension words take -i in standard Latvian, but everyday speech often drops it: Jānītis → Jānīti! or, casually, Jānīt!

4. Names. In everyday speech, feminine names can drop their ending too: Marija → Marij!, Ilze → Ilz!. The full name (Marija!, Ilze!) is the usual careful form.

5. Who you say it to. These forms are for family, close friends, children and pets. Said to an adult you do not know well, a word like meitiņ may sound patronising.

Examples (6)

  1. Māmiņ, kur ir mana cepure?

    Mummy, where is my hat?

  2. Dēliņ, laiks celties!

    Sonny, time to get up!

  3. Meitiņ, nāc ēst!

    Come and eat, sweetheart!

A parent calling a daughter. Meitiņa becomes meitiņ.

  4. Sveiks, mans mīļais dēliņ!

    Hello, my dear son!

The adjective stays definite, and the noun takes the short form.

  5. Marij, vai tu nāksi līdzi?

    Marija, are you coming along?

A shortened name in everyday speech.

  6. Jānīt, pagaidi mani!

    Jānītis, wait for me!

The careful form is Jānīti!. The shorter Jānīt! is common in speech.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the short calling form as the subject of a sentence.

    Māmiņ ir mājās.
    Māmiņa ir mājās.

The short form only calls someone. When you talk about the person, use the full word.

  • Using the short calling form as an object.

    Vai tu redzēji dēliņ?
    Vai tu redzēji dēliņu?

As an object, dēliņš takes its normal accusative ending: dēliņu.
