Uz redzēšanos

Saying Goodbye

Level 1

Uz redzēšanos! means goodbye and works with anyone. Friends often say Atā! or Čau!, and Visu labu! means all the best.

How It Works

Which goodbye to use.

  • Uz redzēšanos! Neutral and polite. Use it when you leave a shop, an office, a class or a stranger. It is fine with friends too.
  • Visu labu! All the best. Warm, and fine with anyone. Visu jauku! is a friendly variant.
  • Atā! and Čau! Bye! These are casual, for friends, family and children. Čau also means hi (see Sveiks, Sveika and Sveiki).
  • Uz tikšanos! See you! It is used when you expect to meet again, for example at the end of a class or an email.
  • Tiksimies! See you! (literally, we will meet). Learn it as a whole phrase for now.
  • Ar labu nakti! Good night! Said when parting at night (see greetings by time of day).

Saying when you will meet. Add līdz (until) with the dative: Līdz rītdienai! (See you tomorrow!), Līdz pirmdienai! (See you on Monday!). Or add a time word: Tiksimies rīt! (See you tomorrow!)

Why does it end in -os? Redzēšanās is a noun made from redzēties (to see each other). After uz meaning to or until, it takes the accusative, redzēšanos, just like uz Rīgu (see uz + the accusative). The phrase itself never changes: it is always uz redzēšanos.

A polite ending. People often close a short conversation with thanks and a goodbye together: Paldies, uz redzēšanos!

    Uz redzēšanos!

The phrase is uz plus the accusative of redzēšanās, so it always ends in -os. Learn it as one unit.

  • Leaving the word after līdz in the nominative.

    Uz redzēšanos, līdz rītdiena!
    Uz redzēšanos, līdz rītdienai!

Līdz takes the dative: rītdiena → rītdienai, pirmdiena → pirmdienai.
