As Well as: Kā Arī
Kā arī means as well as. It adds the last item to a list, often something a little apart from the rest. Pasākumā piedalījās skolēni, kā arī viņu vecāki. (Pupils took part in the event, as well as their parents.)
How It Works
1. Adding to a list. Kā arī usually brings in the last item:
- Pasākumā piedalījās skolēni, kā arī viņu vecāki. (Pupils took part in the event, as well as their parents.)
- Veikalā var nopirkt maizi, pienu, kā arī svaigus dārzeņus. (In the shop you can buy bread and milk, as well as fresh vegetables.)
2. Adding an action. It can also join two verbs with the same subject:
- Viņš raksta dzeju, kā arī tulko romānus. (He writes poetry and also translates novels.)
3. Same case. The item after kā arī has the same form as the items before it: maizi, pienu, kā arī svaigus dārzeņus are all objects in the accusative.
4. Comma. Put a comma before kā arī.
Watch out: kā arī is not the English also at the end of a sentence. For I want coffee too, use arī on its own: Es arī gribu kafiju. See arī.
