Ave Maria
Hail Mary
The first lines of the Hail Mary, learned whole.
How It Works
| Latin | English |
|---|---|
| Ave Maria, gratia plena, | Hail Mary, full of grace, |
| Dominus tecum. | the Lord is with you. |
| Benedicta tu in mulieribus, | Blessed are you among women, |
| et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Iesus. | and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. |
In Church Latin the opening sounds like AH-veh mah-REE-ah GRAHT-see-ah PLEH-nah. In classical Latin it is AH-weh mah-REE-ah GRAH-tee-ah PLAY-na.
The second half of the prayer, Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, appears in the examples. Take the prayer line by line, and say it aloud.
The opening and benedicta tu in mulieribus come from the angel's greeting in Luke 1:28. The words benedictus fructus ventris tui come from Elizabeth's greeting in Luke 1:42.
