의
Possessive Particle
Attach '의' to a noun to show that it owns or is related to another noun. The structure is: Owner + 의 + Item.
How It Works
'의' is a fundamental particle used to show a relationship between two nouns. While its main function is to indicate possession, it can also describe attributes, origin, or other relationships.
Structure:
Noun 1 (Possessor) + 의 + Noun 2 (Possessed)
- 친구 + 의 + 책 → 친구의 책 (friend's book)
- 한국 + 의 + 수도 → 한국의 수도 (Korea's capital)
Omission in Spoken Korean:
In casual conversation, '의' is often omitted when the context is clear. For example, instead of '우리 엄마의 차' (my mom's car), people often just say '우리 엄마 차'.
Pronoun Contractions:
When used with pronouns like '나' (I) and '너' (you), '의' is usually contracted:
- 나 (I) + 의 → 내 (my)
- 너 (you) + 의 → 네 (your)
- 저 (I, formal) + 의 → 제 (my, formal)
Using the full form like '나의' is not wrong, but it sounds more formal or poetic.

Common Mistakes
Incorrect word order.
Not Quite책의 제 친구예요.Better제 친구의 책이에요.The particle '의' must always be attached to the possessor (the owner), not the possessed item. The correct order is [Owner]의 [Item].
Using '의' with pronouns instead of the contracted form in casual speech.
Different Meaning이것은 나의 핸드폰이에요. (Sounds very formal or poetic)Better이것은 내 핸드폰이에요. (Natural)In everyday conversation, pronouns are almost always contracted with '의'. Use '내' for '나의' (my), '네' for '너의' (your), and '제' for '저의' (my, formal).
