-랑
And, With (Casual)
Attach -랑 to a noun to casually say 'and' or 'with'.
How It Works
The particle -랑 is a casual, conversational way to say 'and' or 'with'. It's primarily used in spoken Korean among friends and family.
It attaches directly to nouns and has two main functions:
1. Listing Nouns ('and')
Used to connect two or more nouns in a list. The form changes slightly based on the final sound of the noun:
- Noun ending in a vowel + 랑
- 예: 우유 + 랑 → 우유랑 (milk and...) - Noun ending in a consonant + 이랑
- 예: 빵 + 이랑 → 빵이랑 (bread and...)
2. Indicating Accompaniment ('with')
Used to show you are doing something with someone or something. The same vowel/consonant rule applies.
- 예: 친구랑 영화를 봐요. (I watch a movie with a friend.)
- 예: 동생이랑 게임을 해요. (I play games with my younger sibling.)
While -랑 is very common in speech, for writing or more formal situations, you should use -와/과 or -하고.
Examples (5)
- 저는 빵이랑 우유를 먹어요.
I eat bread and milk.
Word by Word: I bread and milk eat.
Here, '이랑' is used after '빵' (a noun ending in a consonant) to mean 'and'.
- 사과랑 바나나 주세요.
Please give me an apple and a banana.
Word by Word: Apple and banana please give.
'랑' is used after '사과' (a noun ending in a vowel) to connect it with '바나나'.
- 어제 친구랑 영화 봤어요.
I watched a movie with a friend yesterday.
Word by Word: Yesterday friend with movie watched.
In this sentence, '랑' means 'with', indicating accompaniment.
- 누구랑 한국에 왔어요?
Who did you come to Korea with?
Word by Word: Who with to Korea came?
- 주말에 가족이랑 같이 쇼핑했어요.
I went shopping with my family over the weekend.
Word by Word: Weekend on family with together shopped.
Common Mistakes
Using -랑 in formal writing or presentations.
Different Meaning보고서에 차트랑 표를 첨부했습니다.Better보고서에 차트와 표를 첨부했습니다.-랑 is for casual, spoken Korean. In formal situations like writing a report, you should use the more formal particle -와/과.
Trying to connect verbs or clauses instead of nouns.
Not Quite밥을 먹다랑 TV를 봤어요.Better밥을 먹고 TV를 봤어요.-랑 can only connect nouns. To connect actions or clauses (like 'I ate and then watched TV'), you need to use a connective ending like -고.
