-(으)ㄴ 적이 있다/없다
Have/haven't Done
-ㄴ 적이 있다 means 'have done (before)', and -ㄴ 적이 없다 means 'have never done (before)'.
How It Works
This pattern is used to confirm or deny a past experience. It's similar to the English 'Have you ever...?' or 'I have/haven't...'.
Conjugation Rules:
1. Verb stem ending in a vowel: Add -ㄴ 적이 있다/없다.
- 보다 (to see) → 본 적이 있다 (have seen before)
- 가다 (to go) → 간 적이 있다 (have gone before)
2. Verb stem ending in a consonant: Add -은 적이 있다/없다.
- 먹다 (to eat) → 먹은 적이 있다 (have eaten before)
- 읽다 (to read) → 읽은 적이 있다 (have read before)
3. Verb stem ending in ㄹ: Drop the ㄹ and add -ㄴ 적이 있다/없다.
- 만들다 (to make) → 만든 적이 있다 (have made before)
- 살다 (to live) → 산 적이 있다 (have lived before)
This pattern is different from the simple past tense -았/었-. The simple past tense states a fact that happened at a specific time, while -ㄴ 적이 있다/없다 emphasizes the existence of an experience at some point in your life.
It is very common to use this pattern with -아/어 보다 (to try doing), forming -아/어 본 적이 있다/없다, which means 'have/haven't tried doing something before'.
Examples (4)
- 한국에 가 본 적이 있어요.
I have been to Korea before.
Word by Word: Korea-to go tried occasion exists.
This combines 가다 (to go) with -아/어 보다 (to try) and -ㄴ 적이 있다 to express the experience of having gone somewhere.
- 그런 이야기를 들은 적이 없어요.
I have never heard a story like that.
Word by Word: That kind of story heard occasion does not exist.
- 김치를 직접 만든 적이 있어요?
Have you ever made kimchi yourself?
Word by Word: Kimchi directly made occasion exists?
- 저는 말을 타 본 적이 한 번도 없어요.
I have not even once ridden a horse.
Word by Word: I horse ride tried occasion one time even does not exist.
한 번도 없다 is a common phrase used with this pattern to emphasize 'not even once'.
Common Mistakes
Using it for recent, specific past actions instead of general experience.
Not Quite어제 친구를 만난 적이 있어요.Better어제 친구를 만났어요.-ㄴ 적이 있다 is for experiences at some unspecified time in the past. For a specific, recent event like 'yesterday', use the simple past tense -았/었어요.
Confusing lack of experience (-ㄴ 적이 없다) with lack of ability (-ㄹ 수 없다).
Different Meaning저는 운전한 적이 없어요. (When meaning 'I can't drive right now because I don't have a car/license with me')Better저는 운전할 수 없어요.운전한 적이 없어요 means 'I have never had the experience of driving in my life'. 운전할 수 없어요 means 'I am unable to drive (right now, or in general)'. Choose the one that fits the context.
