After Doing for a While

Level 4Sounds Like daga bonikka

V-다가 보니까 expresses discovering something new after doing an action for a while. It's like saying 'As I kept doing X, I realized Y.'

How It Works

V-다가 보니까 is used to express a realization, discovery, or unexpected outcome that occurs as a result of continuing an action over a period of time. It emphasizes that the knowledge or situation in the second clause was not apparent at the beginning but became clear through the process described in the first clause.

Structure:
Verb Stem + -다가 보니까 + [New Realization / Outcome]

Key Points:

  • Continuous Action: The action in the first clause is not a one-time event but something that is repeated or continued for a while.
  • Discovery: The second clause presents a new piece of information, a change in situation, or a realization that the speaker discovered.
  • Speaker's Experience: It is most commonly used to talk about the speaker's own experiences and realizations.

Comparison with similar patterns:

  • vs. -고 나니까: -고 나니까 means 'after completing' an action. The focus is on the result after finishing. -다가 보니까 focuses on a discovery made during the process of a continuous action.
(After I finished eating, I was full.) - Focus on completion.
(As I kept eating, I realized I was getting too full.) - Focus on realization during the process.
  • vs. -아/어서: -아/어서 shows a direct cause and effect. -다가 보니까 shows a realization that emerges over time, not a simple, direct reason.
(I couldn't call because I was busy.) - Direct reason.
(As I was working busily, I realized it was already evening.) - Realization over time.

Common Mistakes

  • Using -다가 보니까 for a single, completed action instead of a continuous one.

Different Meaning
Better

-다가 보니까 implies an action continued over a period. For a one-time action like 'doing yesterday's homework', it's more natural to use -아/어 보니까 (after trying it, I found that...) to express the discovery.

  • Confusing it with -고 나니까, which is about completion.

Not Quite

Graduating is a final, completed event. The realization about the difficulty of finding a job came after this completion. Therefore, -고 나니까 (after finishing) is the correct choice. -다가 보니까 would imply the realization happened during the long process of graduating, which doesn't fit the context.
