-대신에
Instead of, In Place of
Use -대신에 to express substitution ('instead of'), compensation ('in return for'), or contrast ('on the other hand').
How It Works
The pattern -대신에 has three main uses: substitution, compensation, and contrast.
1. Substitution ('Instead of'):
This is the most common meaning. It indicates that one thing is chosen or done in place of another.
- With Nouns: Attach -대신에 directly to a noun.
Structure: Noun + 대신에
Example: 밥 대신에 빵을 먹었어요. (I ate bread instead of rice.) - With Verbs: Use the -는 것 form to turn the verb into a noun phrase.
Structure: Verb Stem + -는 것 + 대신에
Example: TV를 보는 것 대신에 책을 읽었어요. (Instead of watching TV, I read a book.)
2. Compensation/Exchange ('In return for'):
This usage proposes an exchange or describes a trade-off between two actions.
- With Verbs: Attach -는 대신(에) directly to the verb stem.
Structure: Verb Stem + -는 대신(에)
Example: 제가 청소하는 대신에 요리해 줄래요? (In return for me cleaning, will you cook for me?)
3. Contrast/Trade-off ('On the other hand'):
This usage highlights a trade-off, where a positive quality compensates for a negative one, or vice versa.
- With Adjectives: Attach -(으)ㄴ 대신(에) to the adjective stem.
Structure: Adjective Stem + -(으)ㄴ 대신(에)
Example: 이 식당은 비싼 대신에 맛있어요. (This restaurant is expensive, but on the other hand, it's delicious.) - With Verbs: Attach -는 대신(에) to the verb stem.
Example: 주말에 일하는 대신에 평일에 쉴 수 있어요. (I work on weekends, but in return, I can rest on weekdays.)
Shortened Form:
In conversational Korean, the particle '에' is often dropped, and you will frequently hear and see just -대신. The meaning is identical.
Examples (5)
- 커피 대신에 차를 마실래요.
I'll drink tea instead of coffee.
Word by Word: Coffee instead of tea will drink.
- 영화를 보는 것 대신에 공원에서 산책했어요.
Instead of watching a movie, I took a walk in the park.
Word by Word: Movie watching thing instead of in the park walked.
- 제가 숙제를 도와주는 대신에 저녁 사주세요.
In return for me helping with your homework, please buy me dinner.
Word by Word: I homework help in return for dinner buy for me please.
This is an example of compensation. One action (helping with homework) is exchanged for another (buying dinner).
- 이 약은 쓴 대신에 효과가 좋아요.
This medicine is bitter, but on the other hand, it's very effective.
Word by Word: This medicine is bitter instead of effect is good.
Here, -대신에 shows a trade-off. The negative quality (bitter taste) is balanced by a positive one (effectiveness).
- 버스를 타는 것 대신 지하철을 탔어요.
Instead of taking the bus, I took the subway.
This example uses the shortened form '-대신' without '에', which is very common in speech.
Common Mistakes
Forgetting to use -는 것 with verbs for substitution.
Not Quite운동하다 대신에 잠을 잤어요.Better운동하는 것 대신에 잠을 잤어요.When the item being replaced is an action (verb) and the meaning is 'instead of', you must first change the verb into a noun phrase using the -는 것 nominalizer before attaching -대신에.
Learn This First
To use 대신에 with verbs, you need to understand how to nominalize them with 기 or modifier forms.
Related Patterns
- -는 것Thing of -ing
-대신에 requires the -는 것 form to attach to verbs when expressing substitution. It turns the verb into a noun phrase, allowing -대신에 to modify it.
- -거나Or
-거나 means 'or' and presents alternatives without preference. -대신에 indicates that one choice was made in place of another. '커피거나 차' (coffee or tea) vs. '커피 대신에 차' (tea instead of coffee).
- -는 반면에On the Other Hand, While
-는 반면에 is very similar to the 'contrast' meaning of -대신에, meaning 'on the other hand'. They are often interchangeable in this context. For example, '이 식당은 비싼 반면에 맛있어요.'
