-아/어야겠다
I Should, I Need to
-아/어야겠다 expresses a personal realization or a decision that one should or must do something. It's like saying, "Oh, I see now that I need to..." or "I've decided I should..."
How It Works
This pattern is used to express a resolution or a sense of necessity that the speaker has just realized or decided upon. It's more personal and immediate than simply stating an obligation with -아/어야 하다.
Conjugation:
1. Attach -아야겠다 to verb/adjective stems ending in the vowels ㅏ or ㅗ.
- 가다 (to go) → 가 + 아야겠다 → 가야겠다
- 보다 (to see) → 보 + 아야겠다 → 봐야겠다
2. Attach -어야겠다 to stems ending in all other vowels.
- 먹다 (to eat) → 먹 + 어야겠다 → 먹어야겠다
- 읽다 (to read) → 읽 + 어야겠다 → 읽어야겠다
3. For 하다 verbs, it becomes 해야겠다.
- 공부하다 (to study) → 공부해야겠다
- 운동하다 (to exercise) → 운동해야겠다
Key Nuance:
The key feeling of -아/어야겠다 is the speaker's internal thought process. It's not used for stating general rules or commanding others. For example, you would say "도서관에서는 조용히 해야 해요" (You must be quiet in the library) as a general rule, but you might say to yourself, "아, 너무 시끄럽네. 이제 조용히 해야겠다" (Ah, I'm being too loud. I should be quiet now) upon realizing your own behavior.
