Copula (Classical)

Level 6Sounds Like tari

The classical copula たり(たり) is a formal, literary way to say 'to be'. It is a contraction of the particle と(と) and the verb あり(あり). In modern Japanese, it survives primarily in formal writing and specific set phrases like 〜たる者(〜たるもの).

How It Works

The copula たり(たり) is most frequently encountered in 漢文訓読(かんぶんくんどく) and military epics. Crucially, unlike other copulas, it attaches only to nouns.

1. Conjugation Pattern:
It follows the 形容動詞タリ活用(けいようどうしたりかつよう) (タリ活用(たりかつよう) Adjectival Noun conjugation), which is based on the ラ変(らへん) verb あり(あり):

  • 未然形(みぜんけい): たら
  • 連用形(れんようけい): たり / と
  • 終止形(しゅうしけい): たり
  • 連体形(れんたいけい): たる
  • 已然形(いぜんけい): たれ
  • 命令形(めいれいけい): たれ

2. Modern Survival:
While you won't hear this in daily conversation, you will see its 連体形(れんたいけい) たる(たる) in formal rhetoric to define a role: 'As a teacher...'(教師たる者…). The 連用形(れんようけい) と(と) also survives in タリ活用(たりかつよう) adjectival nouns like 堂々と(どうどうと).

3. Nuance vs. なり:
While なり (from に + あり) is for natural identity or location, たり(たり) (from と + あり) is for 'standing as' or 'acting in the capacity of'.

Examples (4)

  1. 我、将軍たり。

    I am a general.

Word by Word: I, general am.

This demonstrates the 終止形(しゅうしけい) (Terminal form) of the copula. It is used to end a sentence with a definitive statement of identity or status.

  2. 学生たる者は、勉学に励むべし。

Those who are students should be diligent in their studies.

Word by Word: Student being person, study-in strive should.

This uses the common modern literary pattern 'Noun + たる者(たるもの)', which defines the expected behavior of someone in a specific role.

  3. 一字たりとも許さぬぞ。

I shall not permit even a single character.

Word by Word: One character even-being permit-not (emphasis).

This uses the fossilized pattern 〜たりとも, which emphasizes 'not even a single unit'.

  4. 荒涼たる光景を見下ろした。

I looked down upon a scene that was desolate.

Word by Word: Desolate being scene (object) looked down.

In modern literary Japanese, たる is often used with certain nouns to create a formal adjectival effect, describing a state.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing the copula たり with the perfective auxiliary たり.

    降りたり雨
    大将たる人

The perfective auxiliary たり(たり) (meaning 'has done') attaches to the 連用形(れんようけい) of verbs. The copula たり(たり) (meaning 'to be') attaches only to nouns. If you see it after a verb, it is not the copula.

  • Using たり to list actions in a classical context.

    読んだり書いたりす。
    読み、かつ書く。

The modern 〜たり〜たり pattern for listing actions is a later development. In classical Japanese, the copula たり(たり) does not function this way.

Learn This First

The classical copula 'tari' (たり) functions similarly to the modern 'da' or 'desu'. It is a contraction of the particle 'ni' and the classical verb 'ari' (to exist). To understand this pattern, learners should be familiar with the basic concept of a copula in Japanese and how the particle 'ni' and the verb 'aru' combine to express a state of being.
