なくて

Because Not/and Not

Level 2Sounds Like nakute

The なくて pattern is the negative version of the て form. It is primarily used to say 'because [something] is not...' or 'not [A], but [B]'. It is the standard way to give a reason for emotions or uncontrollable situations.

How It Works

1. Formation
To create なくて, start with the ない form and replace the final い with くて。

  • Verbs: 食べない(たべない) → 食べなくて
  • い-Adjectives: 寒くない(さむくない) → 寒くなくて
  • な-Adjectives: 静かじゃない(しずかじゃない) → 静かじゃなくて
  • Nouns: 学生じゃない(がくせいじゃない) → 学生じゃなくて

2. Expressing Reason
Unlike から or ので, which can be used for any reason, なくて is the natural choice when the result is an emotion or something you cannot control. For example: 'I am sad because you aren't here.'

3. Contrast (Not A, but B)
It is also used to clarify that something is not one thing, but another. For example: 'He is not a teacher, but a student.'

4. Important Restrictions
Unlike other reason markers, なくて cannot be followed by sentences expressing will, requests, or commands (such as 〜てください or 〜ましょう). It is strictly for describing states or natural consequences.

5. Distinction from ないで
Do not confuse this with ないで. Use なくて for reasons and states; use ないで for 'without doing' an action or for negative requests.

Examples (4)

  1. 漢字が書けなくて、困っています。

I am having trouble because I can't write kanji.

Word by Word: Kanji (subject) cannot write-and, am troubled.

Here, なくて expresses the reason for the uncontrollable state of being 'troubled' (困っている).

  2. このテストは難しくなくて、よかったです。

This test wasn't difficult, so I'm glad.

Word by Word: This test (topic) difficult-not-and, was good.

なくて connects the negative state (not difficult) to an emotion (glad/good).

  3. 彼は先生じゃなくて、学生です。

He is not a teacher, but a student.

Word by Word: He (topic) teacher is-not-and, student is.

This demonstrates the 'Not A, but B' usage with a noun.

  4. お金がなくて、買えませんでした。

    I didn't have money, so I couldn't buy it.

Word by Word: Money (subject) not-have-and, could not buy.

The reason (no money) leads to a result involving potential ability (couldn't buy).

Common Mistakes

  • Using なくて for negative requests.

    忘れなくてください。(Incorrect) / 忘れないでください。(Correct)
    忘れないでください。

Negative requests ('Please don't...') must always use ないでください, never なくて.

  • Using なくて for 'without doing' an action.

    朝ご飯を食べなくて、学校に行きました。
    朝ご飯を食べないで、学校に行きました。

When you do one action 'without' doing another, you must use ないで. なくて is for reasons and states, not the manner of an action.

  • Using なくて followed by a command or suggestion.

    危なくなくて、行きましょう。
    危なくないから、行きましょう。

Because なくて is used for uncontrollable results, it cannot be followed by volitional expressions like 〜ましょう, 〜てください, or commands. Use 〜から instead.
