なあかん

Kansai: Saying an Action Is Necessary

Level 2Sounds Like naakanRegional Speech

The regional negative base plus なあかん expresses necessity in familiar Kansai speech.

How It Works

もう帰らなあかん says that going home is necessary. This is an obligation or a practical need, not a ban on going home.

The construction can be understood as if the action is not done, that will not do. Compare 行かなあかん (must go) with 行ったらあかん (must not go). Learn the complete ending instead of treating every final な as a command or a prohibition.

する has the regional せ base here, as in 勉強せなあかん. Other obligation shapes such as んとあかん also occur; this card teaches なあかん without making it a replacement for every standard negative conditional. Shared polite necessity expressions remain appropriate in formal scenes.
