Clitic Pronoun Placement with the Imperative

Level 3

In Italian, the position of pronouns like mi, lo, ci depends on whether you are being informal or formal. Informal: Dammelo! (Give it to me). Formal: Me lo dia! (Give it to me).

How It Works

The placement of clitic pronouns is a strict grammatical rule dictated by the specific verb form used in the imperative.

1. Informal Forms (tu, noi, voi):
In affirmative commands, pronouns are attached directly to the end of the verb to form a single word.

  • Portalo! (Carry it!)
  • Facciamolo! (Let's do it!)
  • Ditemi! (Tell me!)

2. Formal Form (Lei):
Because the formal imperative uses the present subjunctive, the pronoun must stay separate and come before the verb (proclitic).

  • Lo porti! (Carry it! - formal)
  • Mi dica! (Tell me! - formal)

3. Monosyllabic Verbs (tu):
With short verbs like da’, di’, fa’, sta’, va’, the first consonant of the pronoun is doubled, except for gli or compound pronouns starting with gli (like glielo).

  • da' + mi = dammi
  • fa' + lo = fallo
  • di' + glielo = diglielo (no doubling)

4. Negative Commands:
With the negative imperative, the rules change based on the person:

  • Informal (tu, noi, voi): You can place the pronoun either before the verb or attached to the end. Note that for the tu form, the verb must be in the infinitive (e.g., Non farlo! or Non lo fare!).
  • Formal (Lei): The pronoun must remain strictly before the verb (e.g., Non lo faccia!).

Examples (5)

  1. Se hai il libro, prestamelo per favore.

If you have the book, lend it to me please.

Word by Word: If (you) have the book, lend-me-it for favor.

Informal 'tu' form: the pronouns 'me' and 'lo' are attached to the end of the verb 'presta'.

  2. Signora, lo prenda pure, è un regalo.

Madam, please take it, it's a gift.

Word by Word: Madam, it take freely, is a gift.

Formal 'Lei' form: the pronoun 'lo' comes before the verb 'prenda'.

  3. Ragazzi, non dimenticatevene!

    Guys, don't forget about it!

Word by Word: Guys, not forget-yourselves-of-it!

Informal 'voi' form: the reflexive pronoun 've' and the particle 'ne' are attached to the end.

  4. Dammelo subito!

    Give it to me immediately!

    Word by Word: Give-me-it immediately!

Monosyllabic 'da'': the 'm' in 'mi' is doubled when attached.

  5. Non farlo / Non lo fare.

    Don't do it.

Word by Word: Not do-it / Not it do.

In the negative 'tu' form, the pronoun can either attach to the infinitive or come before it.

Common Mistakes

  • Using enclisis (attachment) with the formal 'Lei' form.

    Dicalo, signore.
    Lo dica, signore.

In formal speech, pronouns never attach to the end of the imperative; they must come before the verb.

  • Forgetting to double the consonant with monosyllabic imperatives.

    Falo subito!
    Fallo subito!

When attaching a pronoun to da', di', fa', sta', or va', you must double the pronoun's initial consonant (except for 'gli').

  • Forgetting to drop the final -e of the infinitive in negative commands.

    Non parlarremi.
    Non parlarmi.

When attaching a pronoun to an infinitive (used in negative 'tu' commands), the final -e of the verb is dropped.

Learn This First

To learn pronoun placement with the imperative, you must first be comfortable forming the imperative in its informal (tu, noi, voi) and formal (Lei) modes. Additionally, you need a solid grasp of direct, indirect, and combined pronouns, as their placement depends on whether the command is formal or informal.
