Verb Forms Across Dialects

Level 6

Synthetic forms combine verb and person, while analytic forms use a separate pronoun. Contemporary dialects differ in their distributions without being defective versions of the standard.

How It Works

Synthetic forms combine verb and person, while analytic forms use a separate pronoun. Contemporary dialects differ in their distributions without being defective versions of the standard.

A synthetic form contains its subject information in the verb ending, while an analytic form places a separate pronoun after the verb. The written standard accepts alternatives in specified parts of the paradigm, and dialects have their own preferences. Do not infer that every synthetic form has an interchangeable analytic partner in every variety.
