Habitual Past Forms

Level 6

Forms such as bhíodh and théadh express repeated past situations. Synthetic endings and dialectal alternatives require separate treatment from a single completed past event.

How It Works

Forms such as bhíodh and théadh express repeated past situations. Synthetic endings and dialectal alternatives require separate treatment from a single completed past event.

The habitual past describes recurring past situations. Théadh sé... gach lá describes repeated going, whereas chuaigh sé describes a past going event without that habitual form. Bí likewise has bhíodh for habitual states rather than simply reusing conditional bheadh.

Examples (3)

  1. Bhíodh sí anseo gach lá.

She used to be here every day.

  2. Théadh sé abhaile ar a sé.

He used to go home at six.

  3. Léadh siad gach oíche.
