ter- (superlatif)

Lexical Superlatives with Ter-

Level 3

The prefix ter- creates superlative adjectives, corresponding to English -est or the most. Common forms occur in both everyday speech and formal writing.

How It Works

The ter- superlative is a lexical way to express the highest degree of a quality. Unlike the adverbial paling, ter- is a prefix that merges with the adjective root.

1. Morphological Rules:

  • Standard: ter- + besar (big) → terbesar (biggest).
  • Roots starting with 'r': One 'r' is dropped to avoid a double 'r'. Example: ter- + rendah (low) → terendah (lowest).
  • Roots with 'er' in the first syllable: If the first syllable contains 'er' followed by a consonant, the prefix often becomes te-. Example: ter- + percaya → tepercaya (trusted/trustworthy). This illustrates the prefix spelling, but tepercaya alone does not mean most trusted; its ter- is not the superlative use.

2. Usage and Register:
Many ter- superlatives occur in both everyday speech and formal writing, such as terbaik (best), terbesar (biggest), and terakhir (last). They are also common in news headlines and official descriptions. The alternative paling is productive and often conversational; the preferred wording depends on the adjective and context.

3. Key Restrictions:

  • Positive Only: ter- can only express 'the most'. It cannot express 'the least' (for 'the least', you must use paling tidak...).
  • Adjectives Only: In this superlative sense, it only attaches to adjectives. If you see ter- on a verb, it likely indicates an accidental action or a resulting state.

Examples (5)

  1. Gunung Everest adalah gunung tertinggi di dunia.

Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world.

Word by Word: Mountain Everest is mountain highest in world.

Here, 'tertinggi' (highest) is formed from the root 'tinggi' (high/tall).

  2. Dia adalah siswa terpandai di kelas ini.

He is the smartest student in this class.

Word by Word: He is student smartest in class this.

'Terpandai' (smartest) comes from 'pandai' (smart/clever).

  3. Ini adalah hasil terbaik yang bisa kita capai.

This is the best result we can achieve.

Word by Word: This is result best which can we achieve.

Terbaik is formed from baik (good). It is a common superlative in both everyday conversation and formal writing.

  4. Siapa penulis terpopuler tahun ini?

Who is the most popular writer this year?

Word by Word: Who writer most-popular year this?

'Terpopuler' (most popular) is used here in a formal journalistic context.

  5. Harga barang itu adalah yang terendah.

The price of that item is the lowest.

Word by Word: Price item that is which lowest.

Note how 'terendah' drops one 'r' because the root 'rendah' starts with 'r'.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'paling' and 'ter-' together (Pleonasm).

Dia adalah orang yang paling terbaik.
    Dia adalah orang yang terbaik.

Using both 'paling' and 'ter-' is redundant because they both mean 'the most'. Choose one or the other.

  • Trying to use 'ter-' for negative superlatives (the least).

    Ini makanan tertidak enak.
    Ini makanan paling tidak enak.

The prefix 'ter-' cannot be used with 'tidak' to mean 'the least'. You must use 'paling tidak' instead.
