Formal Endpoint with Hingga

Level 3

Hingga is a formal preposition used to mark a limit or boundary. It serves as a more formal alternative to sampai in academic writing, news, and official documents to mean 'until' or 'up to'.

How It Works

Hingga has several endpoint and result uses:

1. Formal Endpoint Marker: It indicates the final point of a duration or physical distance. While sampai is common in all registers, hingga often suits formal or literary wording, without guaranteeing a particular tone. Note that for formal inclusive ranges (e.g., dates), Indonesian often uses sampai dengan (abbreviated as s.d.) rather than hingga. However, unlike hingga or sampai, the range model sampai dengan typically introduces a specified endpoint such as a date, time or amount. Use hingga or sampai directly for the simple endpoint-clause model taught here.
2. Temporal Conjunction & Fixed Phrases: It can introduce a clause to mean 'until [an event happens]'. It is also heavily used in fixed temporal phrases like hingga kini, hingga saat ini, and hingga detik ini (up to this moment/until now).
3. The 'Dari... Hingga...' Construction: This pairing expresses a range ('from... to...'). While dari ... sampai is perfectly acceptable and widely used in standard formal contexts, hingga is another standard endpoint choice, often found in literary or journalistic writing.
4. Resultative Conjunction: In formal prose, hingga can function as a conjunction meaning 'with the result that.' It overlaps heavily with sehingga; their result meanings overlap, but hingga also has endpoint uses that sehingga does not share (in informal contexts, sampai or sampai-sampai are often used as equivalents). Note that hingga and sehingga express a result, not an intention. To express purpose ('in order to' or 'so that'), use agar or supaya. Crucially, prescriptive grammar dictates that both hingga and sehingga are intra-sentence conjunctions (konjungsi intrakalimat). In the formal integrated model, keep the result clause connected to its cause, normally without a separating comma. Discourse continuations and stylistic fragments are a different context; sentence-initial spelling alone does not prove an impossible use.
5. Noun Function: Hingga can also function as a noun meaning 'limit' or 'boundary,' most notably in the phrase tiada hingganya (without limit).

Morphology:
As a root word, it forms the base of several words:

  • Sehingga: Formed from se- + hingga, meaning 'so that' or 'with the result that'.
  • Terhingga: Limited or finite (often used as tak terhingga for 'infinite').
  • Tak hingga: Used in mathematical and scientific contexts to mean 'infinity'.
  • Berhingga: Having a limit or being finite.

Register and Intended Relation: Aku tunggu kamu hingga jam tujuh, ya is grammatically formed; sampai is another natural option. For an explicit purpose, use Tolong bicara lebih keras agar semua orang bisa mendengar. A result or endpoint reading with hingga is a different construal, not an automatic syntax error merely because a speaker also has a goal.

Examples (5)

  1. Pameran ini akan berlangsung hingga akhir bulan.

This exhibition will continue until the end of the month.

Word by Word: Exhibition this will continue until end month.

Here, 'hingga' marks a temporal endpoint in a formal context.

  2. Ia bekerja keras hingga jatuh sakit.

He worked so hard that he fell ill.

Word by Word: He work hard until fall sick.

In this sentence, 'hingga' functions as a resultative conjunction, showing the consequence of working hard.

  3. Kasih sayang ibu tidak ada hingganya.

A mother's love has no limit.

Word by Word: Love affection mother not there limit-its.

This demonstrates 'hingga' used as a noun meaning 'limit' or 'boundary'.

  4. Jumlah bintang di langit tak terhingga.

The number of stars in the sky is infinite.

Word by Word: Total star in sky not limited.

Uses the derived form 'terhingga' with a negative to mean 'limitless' or 'infinite'.

  5. Suhu udara bisa mencapai hingga empat puluh derajat.

The air temperature can reach up to forty degrees.

Word by Word: Temperature air can reach until four ten degree.

Used here to mark a limit of degree or amount.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'hingga' to mean 'to arrive'.

Saya hingga di Jakarta jam lima.
Saya sampai di Jakarta jam lima.

To say that you arrived in Jakarta, use sampai or tiba as the arrival verb. Hingga instead marks an endpoint or result in the uses taught here; its wider lexical family also includes a noun meaning limit.
