Unmarked plurality

Level 1

In Indonesian, a noun like buku can mean 'a book' or 'books'. You don't need to change the word to make it plural.

How It Works

Unlike English, where you must distinguish between 'cat' and 'cats', Indonesian nouns are morphologically unmarked for number.

Key principles of unmarked plurality:

  • Context is King: If you are looking at a group of cats and say 'kucing', it is understood as plural.
  • Generic Reference: When talking about a class of things (e.g., 'I like dogs'), the bare noun is used.
  • Redundancy Avoidance: If a number or quantifier is present, do not add productive plural reduplication merely to repeat that quantity. For example, dua (two) + buku (book) = 'two books'. This does not remove a lexical repetition: dua kupu-kupu (two butterflies) retains the whole word kupu-kupu.
  • Reduplication is Optional: While noun reduplication (e.g., buku-buku) exists, it is used primarily to emphasize variety or to resolve specific ambiguity, not as a mandatory plural marker.

Examples (4)

  1. Saya membeli buku di toko itu.

I bought a book / books at that store.

Word by Word: I buy book at store that

Without a specific number, 'buku' can mean one or many depending on what happened at the store.

  2. Anjing suka makan tulang.

    Dogs like to eat bones.

Word by Word: Dog like eat bone

In generic statements about a species or category, the bare noun is used to represent the plural group.

  3. Ada banyak orang di pasar.

There are many people in the market.

Word by Word: There-is many person at market

The quantifier 'banyak' (many) clearly indicates plurality, so the noun 'orang' remains in its base form.

  4. Dia punya dua kucing.

    He/she has two cats.

Word by Word: He/she have two cat

When a number like 'dua' is used, the noun 'kucing' stays singular in form.

Common Mistakes

  • Using reduplication with a number or quantifier.

    Saya punya tiga kucing-kucing.
    Saya punya tiga kucing.

For ordinary counting, say tiga kucing without repeating kucing just to mark plurality. This concerns productive plural repetition; a lexicalized word such as kupu-kupu stays whole after a number.

  • Marking plural on a noun when the context already shows it.

Different MeaningSaya melihat mobil-mobil di jalan.
    Saya melihat mobil di jalan.

Both sentences are correct. Mobil-mobil fits when you want to stress several separate cars, and Saya melihat mobil di jalan is enough when the number is clear from the context. Repeating the noun every time can sound heavy.

Learn This First

To understand unmarked plurality, a learner must first be comfortable with the Indonesian concept of 'context-dependency,' where grammatical information like definiteness and number are inferred from the situation rather than explicit markers or articles.
