keter-...-an

Abstract Nouns from Ter- States

Level 4

The ke-...-an frame can nominalize a ter- state or potential form. Established nouns include keterbacaan (readability), keterbukaan (openness), and ketergantungan (dependence).

How It Works

The keter-...-an circumfix is a sophisticated morphological tool in Indonesian, primarily found in formal, academic, and legal contexts. It functions by taking a root that already accepts the ter- state prefix and wrapping it in the ke-...-an frame.

1. Semantic Functions:

  • Potentiality: It often indicates the 'ability' or 'possibility' of something. For example, baca (read) → terbaca (readable) → keterbacaan (readability).
  • Stative Quality: It describes the quality of a state. For example, buka (open) → terbuka (open/exposed) → keterbukaan (openness).
  • Dependency/Result: It describes a state resulting from an action. For example, gantung (hang) → tergantung (dependent) → ketergantungan (dependency).

2. Morphological Rules:
For a root beginning in r, learn the single-r form of the ter- base; do not mechanically double r when adding the outer nominal affixes.
Example: rinci (detail) → terinci (detailed) → keterincian (the state of being detailed).

3. Register and Exceptions:
Many of these nouns are frequent in analytical writing, but established words such as keterbukaan and ketergantungan also occur in ordinary speech. The ke-...-an family contains lexical meanings that must be learned by word. Keterlaluan can be a predicate meaning excessive or outrageous; it is not a model for treating all keter-...-an words as nouns.

4. False Friends:
Be careful with words like keterangan (explanation) and keterampilan (skill). These are not formed via this pattern; their roots are terang and terampil, which happen to start with 'ter'. They follow the standard ke-...-an rules instead.

Examples (5)

  2. Tingkat keterbacaan buku ini sangat rendah.

The readability level of this book is very low.

Word by Word: Level readability book this very low.

  3. Kita harus mengurangi ketergantungan pada bahan bakar fosil.

We must reduce dependency on fossil fuels.

Common Mistakes

  • Splitting the affixes in keterbukaan.

Saya suka keter buka an kamu.
    Saya suka keterbukaan kamu.

Write the derived noun as one word. Keterbukaan kamu is also grammatical and meaningful in a personal conversation; jujur names honesty and is not an exact replacement for every sense of openness.

  • Failing to drop the 'r' on roots starting with 'r'.

    keterrincian
    keterincian

When the root starts with 'r', the 'r' in the 'ter-' component is dropped. For the root 'rinci', the derivation is rinci -> terinci -> keterincian. Writing 'keterrincian' with a double 'r' is incorrect.

  • Confusing it with the process nominalizer peN-...-an.

    Keteraturan itu dilakukan oleh manajer.
    Pengaturan itu dilakukan oleh manajer.

'Keteraturan' is the state of being orderly, while 'pengaturan' is the act/process of arranging. You cannot 'do' a state; you 'do' a process.

Learn This First

The keter-...-an pattern is a complex circumfix used to form abstract nouns from verbs or adjectives that already carry the ter- prefix (indicating a state or result). To understand this, a learner must first be familiar with how ter- functions to describe states, as well as the general Indonesian system of using ke-...-an to create abstract nouns.
