The Four Market Days
Eke, Orie, Afọ, Nkwọ: the four-day market week.
How It Works
Traditional Igbo weeks have four days, and markets were tied to them.
| Day | Note |
|---|---|
| Eke | first in the usual list |
| Orie | second |
| Afọ | third |
| Nkwọ | fourth |
The names are proper names, so they are capitalised. A market can be named after its day, as in ahịa Eke “the Eke market”. Modern life uses the seven-day week as well, and the order of the four days can vary by area.
