hvaða
Which (Hvaða)
hvaða + noun asks which or what: Hvaða bók ertu að lesa? (Which book are you reading?)
How It Works
One form for everything. Most Icelandic question words change for case, but hvaða never does. It is the same with masculine, feminine and neuter nouns, in the singular and plural:
- Hvaða dagur er í dag? (What day is it today?)
- Hvaða bók ertu að lesa? (Which book are you reading?)
- Hvaða lit viltu? (What colour do you want?) — lit is the accusative of litur.
After a preposition. The preposition goes first, and the noun takes the case it needs: Í hvaða landi býrðu? (Which country do you live in?), Á hvaða tungumáli er myndin? (What language is the film in?)
The noun usually has no article. Say hvaða bók, not hvaða bókin.
hvaða, hvað, hver or hvor?
- hvaða + noun: Hvaða bók? (Which book?)
- hvað alone: Hvað er þetta? (What is this?)
- hver alone asks who?: Hver er þetta?
- hvor asks which of two: Hvor bíllinn er þinn?
hvaða also starts exclamations: Hvaða vitleysa! (What nonsense!)

Common Mistakes
Using hvað before a noun.
Hvað bók ertu að lesa?Hvaða bók ertu að lesa?hvað stands alone. Before a noun, use hvaða.
Using hver for "which" and leaving it in the nominative.
Hver bók ertu að lesa?Hvaða bók ertu að lesa? The book is the object of lesa, so nominative hver bók is wrong. Use hvaða, which never changes form. (Careful Icelandic also has hverja bók, but hvaða is the everyday word.)
