miklu + Comparative
Much Bigger (Miklu Stærri)
Reykjavík er miklu stærri en Akureyri. (Reykjavík is much bigger than Akureyri.)
How It Works
Making a comparative stronger.
- miklu (much): miklu stærri, miklu betra
- mun (much): mun kaldara
- aðeins (a little): aðeins betri
- enn (even): enn betra
Not with mjög. mjög (very) goes with the base form: mjög stór. With a comparative, use miklu or mun: miklu stærri.
By how much. Put the amount in the dative before the comparative. The numbers one to four are then in the dative too (tveimur, þremur, fjórum):
- Bróðir minn er tveimur árum eldri en ég. (My brother is two years older than me.)
- Hún kom tíu mínútum fyrr. (She came ten minutes earlier.)
This is the same dative that því + comparative uses.
With superlatives. A superlative is made stronger with the prefix lang- instead: langstærsta borgin (by far the biggest city), langbest.
