Adjectives With the Dative
Hann er líkur pabba sínum. (He looks like his dad.) líkur puts the other person in the dative.
How It Works
Common dative adjectives.
- líkur (like, similar to): Hún er lík mömmu sinni.
- þakklátur (grateful to): Ég er þér þakklát fyrir hjálpina. The person is dative, and the reason takes fyrir + accusative.
- trúr (loyal to): Hundurinn er trúr eiganda sínum.
- kunnugur (familiar with): Ertu kunnug þessu kerfi?
- vanur (used to): Ég er ekki vanur svona kulda. With a verb, use vanur að.
- skyldur (related to): Hún er skyld mér.
- hollur (good for): Það er þér hollt að hreyfa þig. In everyday speech hollt fyrir þig is more common.
Word order. A noun usually comes after the adjective: líkur pabba sínum. A short pronoun often comes before it: Ég er þér þakklát.
Agreement. The adjective agrees with the subject, not with the dative word: Hann er líkur mömmu sinni (líkur is masculine because of hann). With a reflexive owner, use sínum, sinni.
