Verbs With an Initial Nun

Level 4

In some פ״נ verbs, the first root consonant נ is absent from particular written forms. It remains visible in other forms.

How It Works

Compare Real Forms

Past נפל and present נופל show the initial root nun. Future ייפול does not show it as a separate נ. Similarly, נגע and נוגע contrast with ייגע. The spoken and pointed forms help explain consonant interaction.

Infinitives Are Lexical

Some verbs preserve the nun in their infinitive, such as לנסוע. Other learned forms differ, including לגעת or לנגוע for touch. Do not assume one spelling rule replaces every initial nun in every form.

Root or Pattern Marker?

The נ of נפל belongs to its root family. The first נ in a נפעל form such as נכנס is instead part of its form pattern, with root כ־נ־ס. Root analysis therefore uses several actual forms and the verb’s meaning, rather than labeling any word beginning נ as a פ״נ verb.

Examples (4)

  1. הספר נפל.

    The book fell.

Past נפל retains the root nun.

  2. הספר ייפול.

    The book will fall.

Future ייפול has no separate written root nun.

  3. אל תיגע בזה.

    Do not touch this.

The future-shaped touch form differs from past נגע.

  4. אני רוצה לנסוע.

    I want to travel.

לנסוע retains the root nun in its infinitive.

Common Mistakes

  • Keeping the root nun mechanically in the common future fall form.

    הספר ינפול.
    הספר ייפול.

The actual future form is ייפול.
