Verbs With a Weak Middle Radical
Common ע״ו or ע״י families include קם and שר. Their short visible stems differ from a regular three-consonant stem such as כתב.
How It Works
Stand Up and Sing
For get up or stand up, learn לקום, קם, קמה, קמתי, קמנו and יקום. For sing, learn לשיר, שר, שרה, שרתי, שרנו and ישיר. The infinitive and future can make a weak middle element visible where the past or present letters do not.
Context and Gender
קם and שר can be present masculine forms or third-person masculine past forms in unpointed writing. A time phrase helps: עכשיו הוא שר; אתמול הוא שר. First-person past קמתי and שרתי are more clearly marked by their personal ending.
No Universal Short-Stem Rule
These are useful lexical families, not a rule that inserts ו or י into every short verb. Different patterns and roots produce their own forms. The root label supports recognition after learning actual words; it does not automatically supply a complete conjugation.
