אשר
Relative Clauses in Formal Prose
אשר often introduces a clause describing a noun in written Hebrew. It can correspond to everyday attached ש.
How It Works
A Written Relative
העובדים אשר הגיעו describes the workers who arrived. The relative clause’s verb agrees with the workers as its subject; אשר itself has no masculine, feminine or plural ending.
Keep Required Relationships
הבית אשר גרנו בו keeps בו for the live-in relationship. A direct-object relative such as המסמך אשר קיבלתי commonly leaves the corresponding object pronoun unstated. Different roles within the relative clause have different reference patterns.
Register and Meaning
ש is common in ordinary speech, while אשר is useful in careful writing. It is not a universal replacement for every ש content clause after verbs such as think or say; learn its relative function here. Modern examples do not require a biblical style or historical verb construction.
