Pi'el in the Future

Level 3

Future פיעל forms include אדבר, I will speak, and תדברי, you will speak to one female listener. The opening marks future person.

How It Works

The Speak Family

Learn אדבר, תדבר, תדברי, ידבר, תדבר, נדבר, תדברו and ידברו for I, masculine you, feminine you, he, she, we, plural you and plural they. Contemporary תדברו and ידברו can refer to all-female groups too.

Shared Written Forms

אתה תדבר and היא תדבר use the same verb form. A subject pronoun, name or conversational context identifies the reading. The female singular addressee is distinguished by תדברי.

Keep the Verb’s Meaning

The pattern identifies a form family, not a prediction that the event is intense or repeated. לדבר עם means speak with; לדבר על means talk about. Those relationships stay available in the future. לא אדבר means I will not speak. More literary feminine plural forms are recognition vocabulary rather than the main everyday paradigm here.

Examples (4)

  2. את תדברי עם המורה.

  3. אנחנו נדבר על זה.

  4. הן ידברו בעברית.

ידברו is available for an all-female subject.

Common Mistakes

  • Retaining the present מ when forming the future.

    אני אמדבר עם דנה.
    אני אדבר עם דנה.

The actual first-person future is אדבר.
