Numbers Above Ten
Above ten, number words keep useful gender distinctions but follow new combinations. Learn teens, tens, hundreds and thousands without copying English word order.
How It Works
Eleven to Nineteen
Masculine counted nouns take forms such as אחד עשר, שנים עשר and שלושה עשר. Feminine nouns take אחת עשרה, שתים עשרה and שלוש עשרה. Keep the two halves consistent; do not combine masculine אחד with feminine עשרה.
Tens and Units
Use עשרים, שלושים, ארבעים, חמישים, שישים, שבעים, שמונים and תשעים for the tens. Add ו before a following unit: עשרים ואחד, עשרים ואחת. The counted noun determines the final unit’s gender.
Hundreds and Thousands
מאה is one hundred and מאתיים is two hundred. Count hundreds with feminine number forms, as in שלוש מאות. אלף and אלפיים mean one and two thousand; three thousand is שלושת אלפים. Larger figures have their own nested agreement, so learn each complete quantity before trying to generate it.
