Hif'il in the Future

Level 3

Future הפעיל forms include אסביר, I will explain, and תסבירי, you will explain to one female listener. The past ה does not remain after a future prefix.

How It Works

The Explain Family

Learn אסביר, תסביר, תסבירי, יסביר, תסביר, נסביר, תסבירו and יסבירו. Masculine second-person singular and feminine third-person singular both use תסביר; feminine second person has the ending י.

Look at the Whole Form

Past הסביר and infinitive להסביר provide useful clues, but the future begins directly with א, ת, י or נ. Do not form אהסביר. The actual spoken stem and ordinary full spelling must be learned with the verb.

Agreement and Relationships

The explainer determines the person form. The recipient can still use לי or לה, and a definite explained object still uses את. Contemporary plural תסבירו and יסבירו also serve female groups; formal feminine alternatives belong to a different register. לא אסביר means I will not explain.

Examples (4)

  1. אסביר לך את הכלל.

I will explain the rule to you.

    The speaker takes אסביר.

  2. היא תסביר את התשובה.

    She will explain the answer.

    תסביר here agrees with she.

  3. את תסבירי לי.

You will explain it to me.

    תסבירי addresses one female listener.

  4. הן יסבירו את השינוי.

    They will explain the change.

יסבירו can refer to women in contemporary standard usage.

Common Mistakes

  • Retaining the past ה after a future prefix.

    אני אהסביר את הכלל.
    אני אסביר את הכלל.

    Choose the actual future אסביר.
