הואיל ו and היות ש can mean since or because in a causal explanation. Their following clauses state the reason for another claim or decision.

How It Works

A Complete Reason Clause

הואיל ו־ and היות ש־ introduce a reason for the other clause. הואיל והכביש סגור, ניסע בדרך אחרת gives the road’s being closed as the reason for taking another route.

Attach the Connector Letter

Write the ו of הואיל ו־ on the following word: הואיל ואין זמן. Write the ש of היות ש־ on the following word: היות שהחנות סגורה. The words after the connector form a clause with its own predicate.

A Higher Register

These are higher-register cause connectors. כי can express a cause in a simpler sentence. The clause after היות ש־ may have an adjective predicate: היות שאני עייף supplies אני as the subject and עייף as the predicate.

    Since there is no time, we will shorten the meeting.

    The connector’s ו attaches to the existential negator.

    היות ש introduces a causal clause.

  4. היות שאני עייף, אלך לישון.

    Since I am tired, I will go to sleep.

    The reason is a current state, not a temporal starting point.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving the clause after היות ש without a predicate.

    היות שהחנות, נחזור מחר.
    היות שהחנות סגורה, נחזור מחר.

    After היות ש, supply a complete clause: החנות סגורה includes both the subject and its predicate.
