Double Possession in Modern Hebrew

Level 6

ספרו של דני means Dani’s book in a double possessive construction. The suffix and the של phrase identify the same possessor.

How It Works

Two References to One Possessor

Compare הספר של דני with ספרו של דני. In the second phrase, ו on the noun points to Dani and the של phrase names him explicitly. This is a standard construction, especially useful in written and careful language.

Possessor and Noun Gender

ספרה של דנה חדש has a female possessor but a masculine book, so the predicate is חדש. מחברתו של דני חדשה has a male possessor and a feminine notebook, so it takes חדשה.

Definiteness and Actual Stems

A possessive suffix normally makes the noun definite in this construction, without an extra article on that suffixed noun. The actual noun stem may change before the suffix; learn the real form rather than attaching letters blindly. The simpler של phrase remains a useful everyday alternative.

Examples (4)

  1. ספרו של דני חדש.

    Dani’s book is new.

ו refers to the male possessor; חדש agrees with the book.

  2. ספרה של דנה חדש.

    Dana’s book is new.

ה refers to Dana but does not make ספר feminine.

  3. מחברתו של דני חדשה.

    Dani’s notebook is new.

The notebook is feminine even though its possessor is male.

  4. ראשה של הילדה כואב.

    The girl’s head hurts.

The possessive suffix and של phrase refer to the same girl.

Common Mistakes

  • Making the book’s adjective feminine solely because its possessor is Dana.

    ספרה של דנה חדשה.
    ספרה של דנה חדש.

ספר is masculine; the possessive suffix identifies its owner.
