With: me

Level 2

Put me before the person or thing that goes along.

How It Works

Me adds a companion or a tool to a sentence.

UseExample
a personHele mai ʻo Kala me Keola. Kala came with Keola.
a groupUa ʻai mākou me nā hoaloha. We ate with friends.
a toolUa kākau ʻo ia me ka penikala. He wrote with a pencil.
meE hele mai ʻoe me aʻu. Come with me.

The Reference Grammar gives Noho ʻo Pualani me kona keiki (“Pualani lives with her child”), Aia ʻo Keola me aʻu (“Keola is with me”) and Me kāna kālā ʻo Kimo i uku aku ai i kēia papa, where me marks the money used to pay.

Notice aʻu, not au, after me. The word kēlā me kēia and a me both include me.
