Hello, Goodbye and Thank You
Aloha is hello and goodbye. Mahalo is thank you.
How It Works
These are two of the first words many learners know. People who speak Hawaiian use both every day:
| Say | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Aloha. | Hello. Goodbye. |
| Aloha kakahiaka. | Good morning. |
| Aloha ahiahi. | Good evening. |
| Mahalo. | Thank you. |
| Mahalo nui. | Thank you very much. |
Aloha also means love, kindness and care. Mahalo is thanks, and it can also mean admiration or praise. Kakahiaka is the early part of the day, and ahiahi is the evening. Both words are said with every vowel, so aloha has three syllables: a-lo-ha.
