Frozen Genitive Idioms

Level 6

Frozen genitive idioms (erstarrte Genitivwendungen) are fossilized phrases where the genitive case is used as an adverb. They describe how or when something happens rather than possession.

How It Works

1. Temporal Usage (Indefinite Time)
The most common use is for indefinite points in time. For example, eines Tages (one day) refers to an unspecified day. This contrasts with the accusative, which is used for definite time or duration (e.g., den ganzen Tag).

2. The 'Feminine -s' Phenomenon
A unique feature of these idioms is the 'analogical -s'. In standard grammar, feminine nouns never take an -s in the genitive. However, because most temporal genitives are masculine (des Morgens, des Abends), the feminine word Nacht adopted an -s in the idiom eines Nachts (one night) to match the rhythmic pattern.

3. Manner and Attitude
These idioms can also describe the manner in which an action is performed. Phrases like unverrichteter Dinge (without having achieved anything) or meines Erachtens (in my opinion) are standard in formal and written German.

4. Register
While some are very formal (sehenden Auges - with eyes wide open), others like eines Tages or meines Erachtens are used in everyday professional and literary contexts. They are learned as single vocabulary units.

Examples (5)

  1. Eines Tages werde ich die Welt sehen.

One day I will see the world.

Word by Word: Of-one day will I the world see.

'Eines Tages' is a classic frozen genitive used for an indefinite point in the future.

  2. Meines Erachtens ist dieser Plan zu riskant.

In my opinion, this plan is too risky.

Word by Word: Of-my considering is this plan too risky.

'Meines Erachtens' is a very common way to express a viewpoint in formal German.

  3. Eines Nachts hörte sie ein seltsames Klopfen.

One night she heard a strange knocking.

Word by Word: Of-one night heard she a strange knocking.

Note the -s on 'Nachts'. Even though 'Nacht' is feminine, it takes the masculine/neuter genitive ending in this idiom.

  4. Er verließ das Büro unverrichteter Dinge.

He left the office without having achieved anything.

Word by Word: He left the office of-unperformed things.

This formal idiom describes the manner/result of leaving (empty-handed).

  5. Wir sind guten Mutes.

    We are in good spirits.

Word by Word: We are of-good courage.

This uses the genitive to describe a state of mind or attitude.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a preposition with the idiom.

In eines Tages werde ich reich sein.
Eines Tages werde ich reich sein.

These genitive expressions are 'bare' adverbials. Adding a preposition like 'in' or 'an' is grammatically incorrect.

  • Using the genitive for definite time expressions.

Ich habe ihn eines letzten Jahres getroffen.
Ich habe ihn letztes Jahr getroffen.

These genitives are mostly set phrases like 'eines Tages' or 'eines Abends'. Do not use them for a specific time such as 'last year'; there you usually use the accusative ('letztes Jahr').

  • Correcting the 'incorrect' -s on feminine nouns.

    Einer Nacht passierte es.
    Eines Nachts passierte es.

While 'einer Nacht' is the grammatically correct feminine genitive, the idiom 'eines Nachts' is fixed. Using the 'correct' grammar sounds unnatural here.

Learn This First

To understand frozen genitive idioms, you must first be familiar with the genitive case system, including its specific articles and noun endings (-s/-es). Additionally, since these idioms often function as adverbs without an article, knowledge of strong adjective endings is necessary to parse the internal structure of phrases like 'guten Mutes' or 'letzten Endes'.
