Time-Manner-Place Order
TeKaMoLo is a mnemonic for the neutral sequence of information in a German sentence: Temporal (When), Kausal (Why), Modal (How), and Lokal (Where).
How It Works
When you want to add multiple details to a sentence, German syntax provides a 'default' path known as TeKaMoLo:
- Te (Temporal): When? (e.g., heute)
- Ka (Kausal): Why? (e.g., wegen des Regens)
- Mo (Modal): How? (e.g., mit dem Bus)
- Lo (Lokal): Where? (e.g., im Park)
The Mittelfeld Rule: This order applies to the 'middle field'—the space between the conjugated verb and any other verb parts at the end. If you move one element to the first position for emphasis (using V2 inversion), the remaining elements usually keep their relative TeKaMoLo order.
Interaction with Nouns and Pronouns:
1. Pronouns: Personal pronouns always 'jump' to the very beginning of the middle field.
2. Definite vs. Indefinite Nouns: Definite nouns (known info) usually move before TeKaMoLo. Indefinite nouns (new info) usually stay after TeKaMoLo.
3. Adverbs and Negation: Sentence adverbs (like leider) usually precede TeKaMoLo, while nicht usually comes after the time and reason words but before the manner and place words.
4. Directional Local: 'To Where' (Direction) is often treated as part of the verb action and placed at the very end, even after indefinite nouns.
Examples (6)
- Ich fahre morgen mit dem Zug nach Berlin.
I am going to Berlin by train tomorrow.
Word by Word: I drive tomorrow with the train to Berlin.
This follows Te-Mo-Lo: morgen (Time), mit dem Zug (Manner), nach Berlin (Place).
- Sie hat gestern aus Freude laut im Garten gesungen.
She sang loudly in the garden yesterday out of joy.
Word by Word: She has yesterday out of joy loudly in the garden sung.
A full Te-Ka-Mo-Lo example: gestern (Te), aus Freude (Ka), laut (Mo), im Garten (Lo).
- Wir geben dem Mann heute wegen der Kälte schnell eine Jacke.
We are quickly giving the man a jacket today because of the cold.
Word by Word: We give the man today because of the cold quickly a jacket.
Indefinite nouns like 'eine Jacke' usually stay at the end of the sequence.
- Morgen fahre ich mit dem Auto zur Arbeit.
Tomorrow I am driving to work by car.
Word by Word: Tomorrow drive I with the car to the work.
Even when 'Morgen' (Time) moves to the front, the remaining elements (Manner then Place) stay in order.
- Ich schenke es ihm heute.
I am giving it to him today.
Word by Word: I give it to him today.
Personal pronouns always come before the TeKaMoLo elements.
- Er bringt die Blumen heute Abend nach Hause.
He is bringing the flowers home this evening.
Word by Word: He brings the flowers today evening to home.
Definite nouns like 'die Blumen' (known information) usually move before the TeKaMoLo elements.
Common Mistakes
Placing the location before the time (English influence).
Ich fliege nach London heute.Ich fliege heute nach London. In English, we say 'Place then Time'. In German, 'Time' (Te) almost always comes before 'Place' (Lo).
Placing a pronoun after a TeKaMoLo element.
Ich sehe heute ihn.Ich sehe ihn heute.Pronouns are 'lighter' and must move to the front of the middle field, ahead of time, manner, or place descriptions.
Placing a definite noun at the very end of the sentence.
Ich kaufe heute im Supermarkt den Apfel.Ich kaufe den Apfel heute im Supermarkt.Definite nouns (with 'der/die/das') represent known information and usually move before the TeKaMoLo elements, unlike indefinite nouns.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To learn TeKaMoLo, you first need a solid grasp of basic German sentence structure and the V2 rule. Since TeKaMoLo involves arranging time, manner, and place phrases, you should also be familiar with the prepositions commonly used to form these adverbial phrases.
- aus/bei/mit/nach/seit/von/zuDative Prepositions
Adverbial phrases of manner and place often rely on dative prepositions, which are frequently used in TeKaMoLo examples.
Level 1 - Verb-Second Word Order
TeKaMoLo interacts with the V2 rule; if an adverbial element starts the sentence, the verb must still remain in the second position.

Level 2 - wannWhen
The 'Te' (Temporal) answers the question 'wann?'.
Level 1 - wo/wohin/woherWhere/To Where/From Where
The 'Lo' (Lokal) answers the questions 'wo?' or 'wohin?'.
