The Historical Present
The historical present tells past events with present verbs: En 1863 publica Rosalía de Castro os Cantares gallegos (in 1863 Rosalía de Castro publishes Cantares gallegos).
How It Works
Where it is used
- History and biographies: Castelao nace en Rianxo en 1886 (Castelao is born in Rianxo in 1886).
- Headlines: Un incendio arrasa cen hectáreas en Ourense (a fire destroys a hundred hectares in Ourense).
- Spoken stories: Onte estou tan tranquilo na casa e, de súpeto, soa o timbre (yesterday I am relaxing at home and suddenly the doorbell rings).
How it works. The verbs are ordinary present forms, like the present of -ar verbs (publica, arrasa); the date or a word like onte places them in the past. The effect is to bring the reader into the moment.
Stay consistent. Keep the chain of main events in the present. Switching to a past tense, such as the preterite or the imperfect, in the middle of a sequence confuses the timeline. Background information can still use other tenses when the meaning requires it.
