Simple Future

Level 2

The future adds -ei, -ás, -á, -emos, -edes, -án to the whole infinitive: falar → falarei, chover → choverá, ir → iremos.

How It Works

Formation. Add the endings to the whole infinitive:

  • falar → falarei, falarás, falará, falaremos, falaredes, falarán
  • comer → comerei, comerás, comerá, comeremos, comeredes, comerán
  • partir → partirei, partirás, partirá, partiremos, partiredes, partirán

Written accents go on -ás, -á and -án, because those forms are stressed on the last syllable. Verbs with an accent in the infinitive lose it, because the stress moves to the ending: saír → sairei, oír → oirei, pór → porei.

Almost every verb is regular. Verbs that are irregular elsewhere keep their full infinitive here: ser → serei, ir → irei, ter → terei, vir → virei, poder → poderei, saber → saberei. Only facer (farei) and dicir (direi) shorten.

Pronouns follow the usual placement rules. In a plain statement they attach after the verb: Chamareite mañá (I'll call you tomorrow). After non or a question word they come before it: Non te chamarei.

Usage. The future is common in writing, forecasts and promises. In everyday speech, ir + infinitive (vou chamar) and haber de + infinitive (hei de chamar) are also very frequent for plans. The future can also express a guess about the present (Serán as dez, it must be about ten), which is taught later as the future of probability.

Examples (6)

  1. Falarei con ela esta tarde.

I will talk to her this afternoon.

  2. Mañá choverá en toda Galicia.

Tomorrow it will rain all over Galicia.

  3. Iremos xuntos á festa.

We will go to the party together.

Ir is regular in the future: irei, irás, irá, iremos...

  4. Sairei cedo para coller o tren.

I will leave early to catch the train.

Saír loses its accent in the future: sairei.

  5. Chamareite mañá pola mañá.

I will call you tomorrow morning.

Word by Word: I-will-call-you tomorrow by-the morning.

The pronoun te attaches to the end of the verb in a plain statement.

  6. Os rapaces comerán connosco.

The kids will eat with us.

Common Mistakes

  • Shortening the stem of poder, ter or saber as Spanish does.

    Podrei ir mañá.
    Poderei ir mañá.

Galician keeps the full infinitive in the future: poderei, terei, saberei, sairei. Only facer and dicir shorten.

  • Starting the sentence with the pronoun.

    Me chamarás mañá?
    Chamarasme mañá?

In a yes/no question with no question word, the pronoun still attaches after the verb. A Galician sentence never begins with an unstressed pronoun.

  • Keeping the infinitive's accent in the future.

    Saírei ás oito.
    Sairei ás oito.

The accent in saír marks the stressed í. In the future the stress moves to the ending, so the accent disappears.
