farei / direi
Irregular Futures: Farei and Direi
Facer and dicir shorten their stem in the future: farei, farás, fará and direi, dirás, dirá. The endings are the regular ones.
How It Works
Two short stems
- facer → far-: farei, farás, fará, faremos, faredes, farán
- dicir → dir-: direi, dirás, dirá, diremos, diredes, dirán
The endings are the regular future endings (-ei, -ás, -á, -emos, -edes, -án); only the stem is shorter.
The conditional uses the same stems: faría, farías, faría... and diría, dirías, diría... (Eu non diría nada, I wouldn't say anything).
Verbs built on facer shorten in the same way: desfacer → desfarei, satisfacer → satisfarei.
Only these two. Spanish has several short futures (tendré, podré, saldré, sabré), but Galician keeps the full infinitive for those verbs: terei, poderei, sairei, saberei. Facer and dicir are the ones to memorize.
With a pronoun. After the diphthong -ei, the pronouns o and a become no and na: Fareino mañá (I'll do it tomorrow).

Common Mistakes
Building the future of facer on the whole infinitive.
Facerei a cea esta noite.Farei a cea esta noite.Facer is one of only two verbs that shorten in the future: farei, not facerei.
Building the future of dicir on the whole infinitive.
Dicirei a verdade.Direi a verdade.Dicir shortens to dir-: direi, dirás, dirá.
Using the Spanish future haré.
Harei os deberes despois.Farei os deberes despois.Galician facer keeps its f: farei, farás, fará. Harei is a Spanish-based form.
