Preterite of dar, pór and traer

Level 2

Three common verbs have special past forms: dei (I gave), puxen (I put) and trouxen (I brought): Trouxeron viño (They brought wine).

How It Works

dar: dei, deches, deu, demos, destes, deron
pór / poñer: puxen, puxeches, puxo, puxemos, puxestes, puxeron
traer: trouxen, trouxeches, trouxo, trouxemos, trouxestes, trouxeron

dar: the standard forms are dei and deu. You may hear din and dou in some areas, but write dei and deu. Remember that dou in the standard is the present: I give.

pór and poñer: they are two accepted infinitives of the same verb, and both share the preterite puxen. Verbs built on it follow the same pattern: compor → compuxen.

traer: the standard is trouxen. A form with trougu- exists in speech. Some related verbs, such as distraer and atraer, are regular: distraín.

With pronouns: in a plain statement an object pronoun joins the end of the verb, and the new word may need an accent: Deume un bico (She gave me a kiss), Démoslle as grazas (We thanked him). See enclisis.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Spanish stem traj-.

    Trajeron viño.
    Trouxeron viño.

The Galician preterite stem of traer is troux-, and Galician does not use the letter j.

  • Using the Spanish form puse.

    Puse a mesa.
    Puxen a mesa.

The Galician eu form of pór is puxen, with x and a final n.

  • Starting the sentence with the object pronoun.

    Me deu un bico.
    Deume un bico.

In a plain statement the unstressed pronoun follows the verb and is written joined to it.
