ton / ta / tes
Familiar Possessive Ton, Ta, Tes
In French, 'your' changes based on the gender and number of the object you own. Use ton (masculine), ta (feminine), or tes (plural) when talking to a friend, family member, or peer.
How It Works
To use these correctly, follow these rules:
- Ton: Used before masculine singular nouns (e.g., ton livre).
- Ta: Used before feminine singular nouns starting with a consonant (e.g., ta voiture).
- Tes: Used before all plural nouns, regardless of gender (e.g., tes amis).
The Vowel Rule:
If the word immediately following the possessive starts with a vowel or a 'mute h', you must use ton instead of ta, even if the noun is feminine. This applies to nouns and adjectives alike. For example: ton idée (feminine noun) or ton excellente idée (feminine adjective).
The 'H' Exception:
While most words starting with 'h' use ton (mute H), a few words use an 'aspirated H' which acts like a consonant. For these, you keep ta (e.g., ta hache).
Repetition:
Unlike English, you must repeat the possessive for every item in a list: ton frère et ta sœur.
Social Context:
Only use these forms with people you address as tu. If you are speaking to a stranger or multiple people, you must use votre or vos instead.

How It Connects
Learn This First
To use ton, ta, and tes correctly, you must understand the concept of grammatical gender and number agreement in French. Since these possessives are the familiar form of 'your', you should be familiar with the 'tu' pronoun. Furthermore, because they function identically to the first-person possessives (mon, ma, mes), learning that pattern first provides the necessary template for this one.
