ng / nang
Ng and Nang
While pronounced exactly the same (/naŋ/), ng and nang have different jobs. Use ng for 'what' or 'whose' (nouns), and nang for 'how', 'when', or 'so that' (verbs/adverbs).
How It Works
In Filipino, the distinction between ng and nang is purely orthographic (written); in speech, they sound identical. However, using them correctly is a sign of proficiency.
1. When to use 'Ng':
- Possession: Functions like 'of' or "'s". (e.g., kotse ng tatay - dad's car).
- Direct Object: Marks the receiver of the action in actor-focus sentences. (e.g., Uminom siya ng tubig - He drank water).
- Agent Marker: Marks the doer in object-focus sentences. (e.g., Binasa ng bata ang libro - The book was read by the child).
- Time of Day: Used before parts of the day like umaga (morning), hapon (afternoon), or gabi (night).
- Measurements: Connects a number or unit of measure to the noun. (e.g., isang baso ng tubig - a glass of water).
2. When to use 'Nang':
- Manner (Adverbial): Connects a verb to an adverb to show how something is done. (e.g., Tumakbo nang mabilis - Ran fast).
- Time/Conjunction: Used as a conjunction meaning 'when' to introduce a time clause. (e.g., Nang dumating siya... - When he arrived...).
- Purpose: Used as a conjunction meaning 'so that' or 'in order to'. (e.g., Mag-aral ka nang makapasa ka - Study so that you pass).
- Extent/Degree: Answers the question 'how much' regarding a state or action. (e.g., Tumaba nang kaunti - Gained a little weight).
- Repetition: Used in repeated actions for emphasis. (e.g., Kain nang kain - Eating and eating).
- Contraction: A fusion of the particle na (already) and the linker -ng. (e.g., Gabi nang umuwi - It was already night when [he] went home).

Common Mistakes
Using 'ng' for adverbs of manner.
Kumanta siya ng malakas.Kumanta siya nang malakas.Since 'malakas' (loudly) describes 'how' she sang, you must use 'nang', not the object marker 'ng'.
Using 'nang' for possession.
Ito ang bag nang kapatid ko.Ito ang bag ng kapatid ko.Possession ('of my sibling') always requires 'ng'. 'Nang' is never used for possession.
Writing 'na ng' instead of the contracted 'nang'.
