Tänu sulle means thanks to you, vaatamata vihmale despite the rain, and võrreldes eelmise aastaga compared with last year. Each word needs its own case.

How It Works

These words link a noun to the rest of the sentence. Learn each one with its case:

  • tänu + allative – thanks to: tänu sulle, tänu sinu abile. Use it for a good result. For a bad cause, use tõttu (see tõttu).
  • vaatamata + allative – despite: vaatamata vihmale. It can also follow: vihmale vaatamata.
  • hoolimata + elative – despite: hoolimata vihmast. It means the same as vaatamata, but its case is different.
  • võrreldes + comitative – compared with: võrreldes eelmise aastaga ~ eelmise aastaga võrreldes.
  • seoses + comitative – in connection with, due to: seoses remondiga. It is common in notices.

With a whole clause. Put sellele, sellest or sellega in the right case, then add et: Vaatamata sellele, et oli külm, läksime ujuma. (Even though it was cold, we went swimming.) kuigi says the same thing more simply: Kuigi oli külm, läksime ujuma.

    Compared with Tartu, Tallinn is a big city.

    võrreldes can also follow the noun.

  6. Seoses remondiga on raamatukogu suletud.

    The library is closed due to renovation.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the genitive after tänu.

    Tänu sinu jõudsime õigel ajal.
    Tänu sulle jõudsime õigel ajal.

    tänu takes the allative: sulle, sinu abile.

  • Giving vaatamata the case of hoolimata.

    Vaatamata vihmast läksime matkama.
    Vaatamata vihmale läksime matkama.

    vaatamata takes the allative, vihmale. The elative vihmast goes with hoolimata: hoolimata vihmast.
