Very Long Compounds
keskkonnaministeerium is one word: keskkonna (environment's) + ministeerium (ministry). The last part tells you what the thing is, and the parts before it narrow it down.
How It Works
Estonian can pack a whole phrase into one word. To read a long compound, start from the end:
- keskkonna|ministeerium: a ministry, of the environment → Ministry of the Environment
- laste|aia|õpetaja: a teacher, of a garden, of children → kindergarten teacher
- kõrge|pinge|liin: a line, of high tension → high-voltage line
- ühis|transpordi|pilet: a ticket, for shared transport → public transport ticket
The last part is the main word. It decides the word class and takes all the endings. The parts before it never change: lasteaiaõpetajale (to the kindergarten teacher), keskkonnaministeeriumis (in the ministry).
The first parts are usually genitives (laste, aia, keskkonna, transpordi). Some are bare stems or nominatives (kõrge-, ühis-). Use the form you find in the dictionary. Do not guess, because lasteaedõpetaja is not a word.
Length rule. Compounds of up to three parts are written together: sünnipäevapidu, odaviskevõistlused. From four parts on, it is customary to write them apart or add a readability hyphen: jalgpalli meistrivõistlused or jalgpalli-meistrivõistlused. The hyphen is only for such long words, not for ordinary compounds.
