juurde / juures / juurest
To Someone's Place (Juurde)
To go to a person, use their name or title in the genitive plus juurde: Ma lähen arsti juurde. (I'm going to the doctor.) Being there is juures, and coming back is juurest.
How It Works
The three forms
- juurde – to: Ma lähen arsti juurde. (I'm going to the doctor.)
- juures – at: Ta on arsti juures. (She is at the doctor's.)
- juurest – from: Ma tulen just juuksuri juurest. (I've just come from the hairdresser's.)
Choose the form by the verb, as with other three-way postpositions.
With people
Use juurde, juures and juurest for going to see someone, whether at their home or where they work: sõbra juurde (to a friend's), vanaema juures (at grandma's), arsti juurest (from the doctor's). A regular visit uses käima: Ma käisin eile arsti juures. (I went to the doctor yesterday.)
With places and things
Here the words mean "by" or "near": Kohtume jaama juures. (Let's meet by the station.) Ta läks akna juurde. (He went over to the window.)
Asking
The question word is kelle (whose): Kelle juurde sa lähed? (Who are you going to see?)
Good to know
For someone's home you will also hear poole, pool and poolt: Ma lähen vanaema poole. (I'm going to grandma's place.)
